Downing’s Cottage – English Cottage Plans  

A Cottage developed based on the Works of 18th century American Architect, Andrew Jackson Downing.  The man, who is often credited with starting the American Architectural “Romantic Movement”.   The style is Gothic Revival (or Carpenter Gothic if you like) and represents a renaissance of the venerable English Garden Cottage often revered in print and in art.  

Our version of English Cottage Plans, like its predecessors, is ornamented in steep sloping roofs trimmed in carved “Verge Boards” and capped with carved “Hip-Knobs”.  The look is English Cottage but the floor plan is open and bright with an abundance of glass doors and large muntined windows.  The steep roofs make way for two wonderful lofted bedroom suites at the second floor with all the charm of the Victorian Period.   The Master Bedroom Suite occupies an entire wing with a Master sitting room, huge walk-in closet, impressive bath and vanity areas, as well as, a large private balcony.  

The lower floor is wide open, making the living room, dining room and kitchen into a large well lighted shared space.   All rooms open unto the rear terrace, providing extended outdoor living opportunities and an easy extension of the interior spaces.  Also included on the first floor is a Guest Bedroom suite, which can easily act as a separate family room, office or den.   The Gothic detail extends throughout the house with moldings, beaded ceilings, dropped beams and custom staircase executed in the style of the period.
