These
small house plans describing our "Governor's Cottage" are an Island Style
found all over the Island of Eleuthera. If the style looks familiar to
you as the venerable "Cape Cod", there is a very good reason. Because
the village of Governor's Harbor was founded by British Patriots, or
"Loyalists", who fled New England after the United States won the
Revolutionary war against England to form a Britis

Colony in the Bahamas. These Cape Cod Caribbeans, sometimes know
as "Loyalist Cottages", are the original homes the British built and many
are still being used in the settlements of Governor's Harbor, Spanish Wells
and Tarpum Bay.
The Northern Cape Cod has long ago been adapted for life in the
tropics with the addition of tall operable shutters, multi-sided dormers and long shaded porches.
These
sturdy little cottages have survived hurricanes and wars for some two
hundred years now and there is much to recommend them. The style makes full use of steep roofs, where
sloping ceilings and wainscoted knee
walls create some very efficient,
well ventilated and quaint floor
space. The geometry of the Loyalist Cottage makes it one of the least
expensive homes to build on a square footage basis.
Like its ancestors, our small house plans include the mandatory porch with
carved wooden balusters, gingerbread capitols and ornamented columns.
The interior plan is
thoroughly modern with a large island kitchen, huge Master Suite and a
Den/TV room on the 2nd floor. All three bedrooms are large with lots of
closets and flow-through ventilation. A pleasant, traditional home for most
